Going Green & Product Testing


Rhino Shield was designed from the beginning to be a durable, green and eco-friendly alternative to oil and latex based paints and stains. Our ceramic coating is formulated to be non-toxic, low odor, and safe for skin contact. There are other reasons why Rhino Shield is an eco-friendly ‘green’ product. One is its low e-thermal properties that may help reduce your energy consumption, especially in hot southern climes. A second is Rhino Shield’s amazing adhesion and encapsulation properties. Because our ceramic topcoat is substantially thicker and more durable than traditional exterior coatings Rhino Shield can be used to encapsulate lead paint.

Finally, Rhino Shield simply lasts much longer than most traditional paint. By definition, any product that extends the life cycle (by 50% or more) beyond the industry average is considered ‘green’. The reason being that the extended life cycle eliminates raw material, energy for manufacturing, and then more energy and pollution for transportation that would otherwise be consumed by the inferior non-green average product. Product Testing and Lead Safe Firm

We will test for the presence of lead following EPA guidelines.  Rhino Shield of Chicagoland has passed all requirements to become certified to test and remediate lead based paint on your home.  Many traditional painters do not take care of remediating lead the way they should.  If you have a home built prior to 1978 and a painter is not testing your exterior as part of his recoating process, you should be alarmed.  It does cost more to remediate and prep your home properly.  However, similar to installing Rhino Shield itself you do it once and you don’t have to worry about it in the future.  We will work with your budget to make your home lead safe.

BASF Testing

rhinoshieldga_com-basfIndependent testing confirms our performance claims, and provides assurance to you that our Rhino Shield coating will perform on your home.  BASF is one of the largest and most respected chemical companies in the world. You may recall their slogan “We don’t make the product, we make the product better.” BASF has performed several rounds of testing on our Rhino Shield ceramic coating.  In their report BASF documents that Rhino Shield excels at flexibility, tear resistance, tensile strength, breathability, and viscosity. Additionally, BASF performed an accelerated aging test.  Rhino Shield passed the test, showing no discernible signs of aging, and at the end of the test retained its elastomeric properties. Ceramic Microspheres

The solid materials used in Rhino Shield, including ceramic spheres, offer lower thermal conductivity than the fillers used in traditional paint (CaCo3). This is a key reason for Rhino Shield’s low e-rating.



Fire & Smoke Rating

R-Equivalency test

The test was conducted on October 20, 2010 by Professional Engineer R. Hinojosa, P.E. to determine a U-value calculation based on an R-Equivalent value for the Rhino Shield Durable Finish Coat.  Based on his testing it equated out to 6.89
