What Chicago’s Climate Does to Hardie Plank Over Time
Hardie Plank is dimensionally stable — it doesn’t swell and shrink the way wood does — but that doesn’t mean Chicago’s climate leaves it alone. The stressors are different, and they accumulate in specific ways that standard paint handles poorly.
UV exposure is the most visible. South- and west-facing elevations in the Chicago metro receive intense summer sun that fades and chalks field-applied paint faster than the rated lifespan suggests. Fiber cement holds color well when the coating is intact, but once the topcoat begins to degrade from UV, the surface becomes more porous and the next round of moisture infiltration moves faster.
