Fact Check Friday: Why Your House Needs to Breathe

There's a counterintuitive fact about exterior coatings that most homeowners never hear: a coating that seals out 100% of everything, including water vapor, isn't actually a good thing. If a coating traps moisture vapor inside your wall assembly with nowhere to go, that moisture condenses, and you end up with rot, mold, and paint failure — from the inside out, where you can't see it coming. This week's Fact Check Friday looks at the test that measures whether a coating lets your home breathe the way it needs to.

What the Lab Actually Tested

DRM Consulting tested Rhino Shield's current production coating using ASTM D1653, the wet cup method under Condition A — the standard test for measuring water vapor transmission through paint and coating films. The wet cup method places a water reservoir inside a sealed cup, covers it with a cured film of the coating, and measures how much water vapor passes through that film over time under controlled conditions. The result is expressed in US Perms — a unit measuring how many grains of water vapor pass through a square foot of material per hour, per unit of vapor pressure difference.

Rhino Shield's current production formulation measured 15.1 US Perms.

Why 15.1 Perms Is the Sweet Spot

Building science generally treats anything above 10 Perms as "vapor permeable" or breathable, while anything under 1 Perm is considered a vapor barrier. At 15.1 Perms, Rhino Shield sits well into breathable territory — high enough to let water vapor that's already inside your wall assembly escape outward, rather than getting trapped between the coating and the substrate.

This matters because walls generate and hold moisture vapor constantly, from everyday humidity, cooking, showers, and simply the temperature differential between indoor and outdoor air. That vapor needs a path out. A coating that's too impermeable — often marketed as "100% waterproof," which sounds appealing but isn't accurate to how wall assemblies actually work — can trap that vapor against the substrate. Over time, trapped moisture condenses, saturates the wood or substrate underneath, and causes exactly the kind of hidden rot and mold that's expensive to find and even more expensive to fix once it's spread.

Blocking Liquid Water While Letting Vapor Escape

The reason this doesn't contradict the wind-driven rain and water swelling results covered earlier in this series is that liquid water and water vapor behave very differently at a molecular level. Rhino Shield's system is engineered to block liquid water intrusion from the outside — rain, snowmelt, splashback — while still allowing the smaller water vapor molecules already inside the wall to pass through and escape. That combination is what building scientists actually look for in a well-performing exterior coating: keep bulk water out, let vapor breathe out.

It's a detail that's easy to overlook when you're comparing paint colors and price quotes, but it's one of the more important factors in whether a coating protects your home for decades or quietly contributes to a moisture problem you won't discover until it's a five-figure repair.
