Fact Check Friday: Does Rhino Shield Actually Stop Wind-Driven Rain?

Anyone who's stood on a Chicagoland porch during a July storm rolling off Lake Michigan knows rain here doesn't always fall straight down. It comes sideways, driven by wind gusts that push water directly into siding, around window trim, and into every seam a standard paint job leaves exposed. Most exterior paint has never been tested against that scenario at all — "waterproof" on the label usually just means it survives a garden hose test in a lab, not sustained, pressurized, wind-driven water.

This week's Fact Check Friday covers the test built specifically to simulate that kind of storm.

What the Lab Actually Tested

KTA-Tator, Inc., an independent testing lab based in Pittsburgh, tested the Rhino Shield system per ASTM D6904-03(22), the standard practice for resistance to wind-driven rain for exterior coatings applied to masonry. Two coats of the coating were applied by roller to 8-inch by 16-inch concrete panels at the recommended thickness, allowed to cure for seven days at controlled lab conditions, then mounted into a wind-driven rain test chamber.

The panels were exposed to 24 continuous hours of water spray at a flow rate of 60 to 70 gallons per minute through a fish-tail nozzle, combined with 5 inches of mercury internal air pressure to force water into any weakness in the coating — sustained conditions well beyond what even a severe Midwest thunderstorm delivers in a single event. Panels were monitored throughout for water penetration by inspecting the back side, then weighed before and after to measure any moisture absorbed into the coating itself.

The result: no visible water leaks on either panel, meeting the ASTM criteria for a pass. Average weight gain across the two panels was 0.40%. One panel showed a few tiny surface blisters; the other showed none.

Why This Test Is the One Most Coatings Skip

Wind-driven rain testing is expensive and time-consuming, which is exactly why a lot of paint manufacturers don't run it. It's far cheaper to make a "weather-resistant" claim based on basic water-repellency testing than to pay an accredited lab for 24 hours of pressurized water exposure. The difference matters because water penetration is the root cause behind most exterior paint failures homeowners deal with — not the paint peeling from age, but water getting in behind it first, then pushing the paint off from underneath as it tries to escape.

A coating that passes wind-driven rain testing is doing something more specific than "repelling water." It's maintaining an unbroken barrier under sustained wind pressure, on a real masonry substrate, for a full day straight — the closest a lab can get to simulating what your siding actually experiences during a Chicagoland storm season.
